2010 Baseball Winter Camps

South Jasper Place (SJP) is acknowledging two baseball winter camps that it is recommending to its players.

Depending on your age and/or playing level desire, attending one of these two camps will provide excellent off-season baseball training and conditioning.

Baseball Alberta Winter Camp

This camp is for players 8 to 18 years and is running on Sunday mornings at the Kinsmen Sports Centre (#101 – 9100 Walterdale Hill), starting on February 14, 2010.

The camp fee has been set at a very affordable rate to encourage maximum participation.

To register for the camp, please complete the form on the SJP website (sjpbaseball.ca) or the Baseball Alberta website (baseballalberta.com) and email it to gregwolfe@baseballalberta.com.   If you require more information, please contact Greg Wolfe at the Baseball Alberta office at phone # 427-9008 or email Greg at the above noted email address.

Edmonton Cardinals Winter Camp

This camp is for PeeWee, Bantam and Midget players (aged 12 to 18 years), who wish to play at the highest level of baseball in the province of Alberta.

In order to play in the Cardinals Baseball program for 2010, attendance at this camp is highly recommended. The camp starts on January 16th, 2010 and runs twice a week on Saturdays (10:00am to 1:00pm) and Wednesday evenings (7:00pm to 9:15pm).

SJP encourages Bantam and Midget players wishing to play Performance (AAA) in the 2010 season to register for this camp. SJP and the Cardinals will also be working together to field a PeeWee AAA team in 2010, so PeeWee aged players wishing to play AAA are encouraged to register for this camp.

For more information on this camp, please visit the Cardinal website at www.seeba.ca

To register for the Edmonton Cardinals camp, please call Rod Scammell at 434-4989 or email Rod at rscam@telusplanet.net

If SJP players or parents have any general questions regarding either of these two camps or are having registry difficulties, please contact Dan Rude at

Ph # 481-0689 or send an email to drude@shaw.ca

Sponsorship

The support of SJP is greatly appreciated

For the 2010 season, SJP has multiple tiers of sponsorship available. Sponsorships enable SJP as non-profit association to provide quality programs for our youth. Please consider sponsoring a worthwhile cause and at the same time promoting your business. To discuss sponsorship opportunities, please contact:

Shaun Mellen at ph # 487-1465 or mmellen@telus.net

SJP wishes to acknowledge and thank: CN Rail Service and Capital Power for their generous donations in 2010 and the Alberta Lottery Funding Program for the grant assisting in the construction of our new Batting Cage.

Umpires Corner

Umpires are as important as any other participant in the sport of baseball, for without them, there would be no games. SJP is of course no different and we truly value and appreciate our umpires, which are mainly comprised of the fine young men and women from our program. SJP thanks all those who gave their time to umpire in 2009.

SJP is looking for the return of these umpires for the 2010 season and for new individuals to step forward.

For any ball players or individuals interested in learning a different side of the game and earning a few dollars at the same time, contact Rob McGregor at 487-9583 or look us up at our player registration in the spring.

SJP Player Acknowledgments

SJP wishes to acknowledge the following players who graduated from our minor baseball program in 2009.

Ben Poeter, Dillon Knoll, Connor Bachmeier, Ryan Nazarek, Michael Hubensky, Tetsu Nakashima, James Hopchin.

These players have been registered in the SJP program in some cases from Rookie Ball all the way through to the last year of Midget.   We know that these individuals will continue to enjoy sporting activities, understand the value of teamwork, and be outstanding citizens.   At the end of day, this is what our program is all about.

SJP is also very proud to note that Duncan Knoll is the 2009 winner of the Baseball Alberta Minor Coach of Year Award. Congratulations and thank you Duncan.

Volunteers

The final section of this newsletter addresses the need for new volunteers to step up to help operate our association for 2010 and forward.

SJP Minor Baseball Association is the only baseball organization in West Edmonton offering both competitive and recreational programs for players between the ages of 4 and 18 years.

SJP operates solely through the commitment and efforts of our volunteer executive members and coaches. Without their willingness to donate a few hours a month to SJP, our baseball organization would not exist.

As we begin planning for the 2010 season, we find ourselves in need of volunteers who would like to join our Executive and are willing to devote a few hours each month on various initiatives. We currently have the following openings to fill:

  • Uniform Manager
  • Mosquito Recreation Category Director
  • Secretary
  • Fundraising Coordinator
  • Photo Coordinator
  • Fields Allocator

If you are interested in committing a few hours each month to one of the above positions or contribute to our Executive in any way, please contact the SJP President Dan Rude at drude@shaw.ca 780-481-0689, or Rick Bitensky bitensky@telus.net 780-481-3951.

“I started coaching with SJP in 2002 and joined the Executive in 2006. I found myself involved with a group of caring, giving and fun people all working for a common goal. I have found my time with the board to be very enjoyable and rewarding. I enjoy being part of so many teams’ and players’ season. SJP is a worthy and wonderful organization with fun and interesting people with whom I enjoy the few hours each month.”

                                                                        Rick Bitensky

Annual General Meeting (AGM)

SJPMBA’s AGM is being held on March 22, 2010 at the Crestwood Community Hall (14325 – 96 Avenue), at 7:30 pm.  The strength of any organization is achieved only by a strong membership base.  Please get to know your organization better by attending this year’s AGM.

We are also in desperate need to fill various executive positions.  The experience of serving on the SJPMBA executive is a definite worthy, enjoyable and very rewarding way to spend a few hours each month.

Rick Bitensky, and any others, that we have missed.
